the setKobra Films is pleased to announce the acquisition of The Set (1970).  Based on a book by Roger Ward (Mad Max, Turkey Shoot), The Set was the original Australian sex film that shocked a nation with its honest and frank depiction of Australia’s then changing sexuality.

The Set graced the front pages of national newspapers for over a year, mainly due to Hazel Phillips, TV personality and Gold Logie winner, appearing naked in the film. The Sydney Morning Herald, in their review, when as far as to personally attack her and judged her for being in the film. That, and its down-to-earth depiction of homosexual relationships; the act of homosexual sex, at the time, was still illegal in every state and territory in Australia. The film went on to be condemned across all of the national’s mainstream press, but it did find praise in underground publications:

The Set has been unavailable in any format for over 45 years, Kobra Films is proud release it to DVD in late 2015 with a wide array of bonus content.

The Set revolves a young working-class man who sells shirts at a Sydney department store, Paul Lawrence (Sean McEuan), dreams of going to art school. When his girlfriend Cara (Julie Rogers) leaves for London, Paul becomes the protégé of renowned designer Marie Rosefield (Brenda Sender). Marie belongs to ‘the set’, an upper-class clique whose members include Mark Bronoski (Denis Doonan), an influential artist. Bronoski commissions Paul to design a set for flamboyant British stage director John L Fredericks (Michael Charnley). Helping Paul is Tony Brown (Rod Mullinar), a handsome student who is dating Paul’s cousin, Kim Sylvester (Bronwyn Barber). As Paul becomes part of ‘the set’, he begins a homosexual relationship with Tony. Meanwhile, Kim’s mother, Peggy (Hazel Phillips), is bored with her marriage and has an affair with Bronoski. As the deadline for the set approaches, Paul starts to question his values and those of his new friends.

Before Alvin Purple, Number 69 or even The Naked Bunyip, there was The Set.

the list hardcoverUnder Belly Comics have just launched a Kickstarter to release a beautiful limited edition hard cover of Paul Bedford’s The List – The New Commandments, complete with a brand new cover by Vincent Sammy.

We at NCP love Aussie comics, and The List is a great example of them. Even if you already own the soft cover, this new hard cover is a must have.

A KILLER STALKS THE STREETS. He speaks of bearing the New Commandments… of a visit from an Angel… of being God’s chosen Messenger… of a reunion in Heaven with his dead parents… His past is of no consequence. His future is bent toward the completion of his quest. Could he indeed be the bearer of the God’s New Commandments, or is all he simply a madman?

Praise for The List:

“… (The List) is so much more than a simple hack and slash fest featuring gore just for the sake of gore… kept me glued to this book all the way through to its unexpected revelation…” (US)

“Bedford, Pop and Bonin deliver a masterpiece.” (Aust.)

“The finale to The List was as harrowing a read as I expected from the set-up… Days later I’m still digesting the symbolism of its emotionally-charged ending.” (UK)

“Immerse yourself into this twisted world, take that leap and do something unique. (The List) has stuck with me like a scar and trust me that is a good thing. ” (US)

“Bedford controls the story and the reader’s access to it masterfully. If The List was a movie, you couldn’t be blamed for thinking that Polanski, Kubrick or maybe even Scorsese had a hand in things.” Gary Chaloner (Will Eisner’s John Law; Morton Stone: Undertaker)

Contest of Champions Reborn!

Posted by David On January 21, 2015 2 COMMENTS

Hi All!

Last year we mentioned that we would be overhauling the way Contest of Champions works.

Crew Member Brian (WoW Yoda) is probably CoC’s biggest fan, and he has been asking (cough, hassling, cough) me to change CoC to a ladder system for some time now. And I thought now was a good time to start!

So welcome to Contest of Champions 2.0!

There are 2 Divisions – Street Fighters & Heavy Hitters. The Street Fighters are what Marvel Comics refers to as the ‘street level heroes’. People like Batman, Wolverine etc. Whereas the Heavy Hitters are the Superman level characters.

There will be 7 Rounds per Division, in an 8 Fighter Single Elimination format.

I have selected the combatants (some randomly, some specifically) and we will be pitting them against each other every second episode, starting with episode #127.

We will reveal the combatants at the end of each battle, and on our Facebook page –

And the best thing about Contest of Champions 2.0 is that we want you guys to be involved! When we post the combatants for that Round on our Facebook page, tell us who you think will win, and why, and we’ll mention that on the show, incorporating your idea into the battle! This is going to be epic!

Each battle will take place in the same arena, an 1800 x 1800 feet cube (about 4 city blocks of 450 feet by 450 feet), filled with typical city stuff (buildings, warehouses, shops, cars), covered by a forcefield reaching up 700 km. No civilians are present.

So let’s get started. Street Fighters DivisionRound #1X-23 versus Robin (Damien Wayne)

Who do YOU think will win?
