Behind the Counter – Pulp Fiction

Welcome to the triumphant return of Behind the Counter, where we spotlight the stores that supply us with objects of our various obsessions.

For this installment we have another international entry, Pulp Fiction, from beautiful Long Beach, California USA!

I was first introduced to Pulp Fiction through their online store – CheapGraphicNovels.com. I was doing some research into which online store I could use to buy some back issue trade paperbacks at reasonable prices and CheapGraphicNovels stood far and above the competition. Not only did they have an awesome selection of trades available, but their prices were unbelievable! Brand new trades at 30, 40 & 50% off! The shipping is very reasonable, fast, and the books are always well packed and arrive un-damaged.

That alone would ensure my custom, but what really keeps me coming back is the customer service. The man in charge of the online orders is Max, and as long as he is working at Pulp Fiction, I will continue to buy from there. He is 100% committed to his customers and has always provided me personally with the best customer service. So here is the man himself, take it away Max!

Behind the Counter – Classic Comics

Welcome to another installment of Behind the Counter, our series that showcases the great comic and nerd culture shops around Australia.

Classic Comics was the first comic store I shopped at and had a standing order with so they will always have a special place in my heart. It is a little hidden away, but it is one of the most well loved stores in Melbourne and definitely worthy of a visit. You wont be disappointed.

Instead of emailing the questions, I went to Classic and interviewed Jarrod and Looch. (special thanks to lovely Crystal for transcribing!)

Behind the Counter – Gotham Comics

Welcome to Behind the Counter, our series that showcases the great comic and nerd culture shops around Australia the World!

That’s right, for this instalment of Behind the Counter we’re heading across to New Zealand, to spotlight their #1 store – Gotham Comics!

Crystal and I visited Gotham Comics during our recent trip to New Zealand and as soon as I arrived I new I had exactly what I was looking for 🙂

The store wasn’t huge, but it was chock full of everything a comic fan would love. We got to chatting to the man behind the counter and what was going to be a 5 minute look around turned into an awesome conversation with a really interesting guy. I am of course referring to Michel, the gentleman kind enough to not only answer my questions for this post, but also regal us with stories of his wresting (as Ligerimpactprowrestling), artistic ambitions (check out his great stuff on deviantart) & experiences at conventions. He was very cool and I cannot thank him enough. He also has probably the coolest business card you will ever see – check it out at the bottom of this post!

On with the questions!

Behind the Counter – Popcultcha

Welcome to Behind the Counter, our series that showcases the great comic and nerd culture shops around Australia.

For this instalment we’re back to Geelong, Victoria with the great guys from Popcultcha.

I’ve never been to the store itself, but while researching them I was blown away by their awesome website and Facebook page. They update the site regularly and are constantly posting, keeping their loyal customers informed and entertained.

They have a great range, and I even found something to buy for myself! I found a cool X-23 vs Lady Deathstrike diorama and had to have it! (I’ll post some pics of it tomorrow :)). It was actually on their Ebay store, so don’t forget to check that out too. Seriously, check out their website, you’ll definitely find something you’ll want, and you can’t beat free shipping anywhere in Australia.

Jase from Popcultcha was good enough to answer my questions and supply some photos, and even models for us in one of them!

Take it away Jase!

Behind the Counter – Kings Comics

Welcome to Behind the Counter, our series that showcases the great comic and nerd culture shops around Australia.

For this instalment we’re heading interstate, to showcase Sydney’s premier comics shop – Kings Comics!

We are so excited to have Kings be a part of our Behind the Counter series and huge thanks to Stephen Ford for taking the time to write these awesomely detailed answers to our questions. Seriously, he went all out and it’s a great read.

With 26 years in the industry, Kings Comics needs no introduction (but I’m going to anyway :)). Kings Comics are Sydney’s most well known nerd culture based store, with strong ties to the community by their participation in such programs as the National Year of Reading 2012 ‘love2read’ program, and are the recipients of prestigious awards like the 1996 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award & the 2012 Diamond Comic Distributors Best Practices Award (for best Graphic Novel Section).

Even though I always check out their giant booth at every convention I attend, so far I’ve only visited the Kings Comics store once (I live in Melbourne) and it was an interesting experience. When I asked the concierge for directions to Pitt Street she immediately asked if I was going to Kings! When I asked how she knew that she said that quite a few guests ask for the same directions and she now knew the directions by heart! When I arrived at the store I was very impressed. They have an awesome statuette section (a personal love of mine) that comprises most of their front window and cool signage that just draws you in. After drooling over the cool statuettes that I wanted I entered and was again impressed by the great layout. I’d never been there before, but I almost immediately knew where everything was, and anything I couldn’t find was pointed out to me buy the very helpful and friendly staff person. Great stuff.

Take it away Stephen!
