Hi Team,
Loved this episode! The Oscar round table was right on point and it was great to be reminded of the importance of the role soundtracks play in setting the mood for all the things we love to be thrilled, shocked, devastated and made to soil ourselves by.
My 5 picks in no particular order:
1) “Memorial” from The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover. A little bit of wee comes out every time I hear this. The build, the opera-ish-ness (it’s a word, look it up) and the sheer richness of Michael Nyman’s composition just hits me right *here*. What do you mean you can’t see where I’m pointing? Rude.
2) The Hart to Hart theme. It has strings, disco rhythms, masses of percussion, urgent wah-wah (wah-wah is NOTHING if it’s not played with urgency), jet planes, explosions, a voiceover (complete with classic line ‘This is Mrs H. She’s GOI-JUSS…’) and a big finish, the auditory equivalent of a happy ending. Allegedly. Ahem.
3) Henry Mancini’s ‘The Pink Panther’. Instantly recognisable, up there with the Jaws theme in terms of rooting (hee!) itself in popular culture.
4) The Doctor Who theme. I dare you to sit in a room anywhere and start singing the opening rhythm. Within seconds you’ll have someone squealing “WHEEEEEEEEEEE-OOOOOOOH-EEEEEEEEEEEEE! EEEEEEEEEEEEE-OOOOOOOOOOOH” over the top. So amazing it’s been sampled and covered respectively by cool-as-frack electronic outfits the KLF (The Timelords – Doctorin’ The Tardis) and Orbital (Doctor?). Nuff said, bitches.
5. EVERYTHING from Psycho. The urgency. The horror. The genius. The amount of Easy-Off-Bam required to get all the bits of Janet Leigh out of that shower. Perfection.
I have to post this now, as Jaws, Tubular Bells and Calling You are threatening to beat me up.
Hi Seb!
Thanks for sharing your music picks with us (and for the praise of course!). Some great choices there. I agree with every one and now I have this overwhelming urge to watch some Hart to Hart lol.
Oh and thanks for being brave enough to admit your incontinence problem when hearing ‘Memorial’. I have the same reaction to ‘Planet Krypton’ but I’m nowhere near brave enough to admit it on the show! 🙂
Thanks for listening!
Doh! Can’t believe I didn’t pick the Doctor Who theme!
