Welcome to Behind the Counter, our series that showcases the great comic and nerd culture shops around Australia.
For this instalment we’re back to Geelong, Victoria with the great guys from Popcultcha.
I’ve never been to the store itself, but while researching them I was blown away by their awesome website and Facebook page. They update the site regularly and are constantly posting, keeping their loyal customers informed and entertained.
They have a great range, and I even found something to buy for myself! I found a cool X-23 vs Lady Deathstrike diorama and had to have it! (I’ll post some pics of it tomorrow :)). It was actually on their Ebay store, so don’t forget to check that out too. Seriously, check out their website, you’ll definitely find something you’ll want, and you can’t beat free shipping anywhere in Australia.
Jase from Popcultcha was good enough to answer my questions and supply some photos, and even models for us in one of them!
Last weekend, I attended the FEC Extravaganza at All-Star Comics in Melbourne. FEC and All-Star put on a hell of an event showcasing three new books: Alisha Jade’s Seven, Ben Michael Byrne’s Kranburn #4, and the anthology horror book Fireside Tales.
There was a lengthy and highly entertaining Q&A with the creators, as well as signings and, most importantly, free beer! With All-Star packed out, it was clear to see that there is a lot of support for the excellent work being produced by local talent.
I picked up all 3 titles and was impressed with the overall quality of what I read. Here’s some quick reviews:
Mists of Pandaria is out and WoW Yoda makes his triumphant return!
To start out this wonderful occasion, we will begin with a Blood spec Death Knight.

My Life Render spec is all about throwing damage onto your opponents and gaining hit points for yourself as much as possible. After all, if Blizzard makes this a step up like Burning Crusade and Cataclysm were for those just entering the new lands, you will want to keep yourself alive to make sure you get those precious experience points.
Welcome to Behind the Counter, our series that showcases the great comic and nerd culture shops around Australia.
For this instalment we’re heading interstate, to showcase Sydney’s premier comics shop – Kings Comics!
We are so excited to have Kings be a part of our Behind the Counter series and huge thanks to Stephen Ford for taking the time to write these awesomely detailed answers to our questions. Seriously, he went all out and it’s a great read.
With 26 years in the industry, Kings Comics needs no introduction (but I’m going to anyway :)). Kings Comics are Sydney’s most well known nerd culture based store, with strong ties to the community by their participation in such programs as the National Year of Reading 2012 ‘love2read’ program, and are the recipients of prestigious awards like the 1996 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award & the 2012 Diamond Comic Distributors Best Practices Award (for best Graphic Novel Section).
Even though I always check out their giant booth at every convention I attend, so far I’ve only visited the Kings Comics store once (I live in Melbourne) and it was an interesting experience. When I asked the concierge for directions to Pitt Street she immediately asked if I was going to Kings! When I asked how she knew that she said that quite a few guests ask for the same directions and she now knew the directions by heart! When I arrived at the store I was very impressed. They have an awesome statuette section (a personal love of mine) that comprises most of their front window and cool signage that just draws you in. After drooling over the cool statuettes that I wanted I entered and was again impressed by the great layout. I’d never been there before, but I almost immediately knew where everything was, and anything I couldn’t find was pointed out to me buy the very helpful and friendly staff person. Great stuff.
